Göynük Victory Tower (Zafer Kulesi)
Göynük, Bolu
A three-story wooden clock tower on a hill overlooking the town, commissioned by District Governor Hurşit Bey in memory of the victories of the War of Independence.
Its story
The tower, the symbol of Göynük, was built on a hill overlooking the town in memory of the National Struggle, on the encouragement of Hurşit Bey, the first district governor of the Republican period. The three-story wooden body rising on a hexagonal stone foundation is completed with railings running around each floor and a pointed cap. The tower is also known for being a location of the award-winning film 'Akrebin Yolculuğu' (Journey on the Hour Hand); it burned in 2001 during the shooting of another film and was faithfully restored. From the hill where the tower stands, Göynük's red-tiled houses, minarets and valley can be seen at a glance; it is a good spot for the sunset.
