Bursa Bedesten and Kapalıçarşı (Covered Bazaar)
Osmangazi, Bursa
A covered bazaar that grew over the centuries around the bedesten built by Yıldırım Bayezid, full of silk, towel and knife shops.
Its story
The bedesten was built in the late 14th century by Yıldırım Bayezid as a domed building where valuable goods were kept and sold. Over time, arastas (market streets), lanes and hans were added around it, forming today's Kapalıçarşı. Badly damaged in the 1855 earthquake and the fires that followed, the bazaar was repaired and brought back into use. Today shops selling silk scarves, Bursa towels, Karagöz figures, knives and candied chestnuts line its rows. Together with the Ulu Mosque, Koza Han, Emir Han and the Orhan Gazi Complex, it forms the commercial core of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
