Hüdavendigâr (Murad I) Complex
Osmangazi, Bursa
A two-story building in Çekirge, unique in Ottoman architecture, designed with a mosque below and a madrasa above.
Its story
The mosque commissioned in the 14th century by Sultan Murad I (Hüdavendigâr) on the Çekirge ridge has an unusual plan, with a zaviye-type mosque on the ground floor and madrasa cells on the upper floor. The alternating brick-and-stone masonry and pointed-arched porticoes of the facade show the influence of the Byzantine building tradition. The complex also includes a soup kitchen (imaret), a hammam and the tomb of Murad I; the sultan was buried here after he fell at Kosovo. The group of buildings is one of the components of the Bursa and Cumalıkızık UNESCO World Heritage site.
