Cumhuriyet Square and Government House
Merkez, Kastamonu
A city square surrounded by the Government House by the architect Vedat Tek and historic public buildings, with the Atatürk and Şerife Bacı Monument.
Its story
Cumhuriyet Square is Kastamonu's largest square and, together with Nasrullah Square, one of the city's two important open spaces. Around the square are historic buildings such as the Government House designed by the architect Vedat Tek, the Kastamonu University Rectorate Building, the Rıfat Ilgaz Cultural Center and the Military Recruitment Office. The Atatürk and Şerife Bacı Monument in the middle commemorates Şerife Bacı, who fell as a martyr while carrying ammunition to the front in the War of Independence. Seen from the castle and the clock tower, the square is the most prominent part of the city's historic center.
