İsmail Bey Complex
Merkez, Kastamonu
The principality's largest complex, consisting of a mosque, imaret, madrasa, tomb and han, commissioned on the Şehinşahkayası hill by the Candarid İsmail Bey in 1454.
Its story
The complex was founded in the 15th century in the name of Kemâleddin İsmâil Bey, the last emir of the Candarid Principality, on the hill called Şehinşahkayası north of the city. According to its inscription, the mosque was built in 858 (1454) and has a plan with two domes in a row and a tabhane (guest rooms). The mosque, imaret, madrasa and han are connected to one another by a courtyard wall; the tomb is inside the courtyard, and the hamam outside. Its endowment deed of 1457 attached many hans, hamams and lands in and around Kastamonu to the complex. Because of its similarities with Ottoman architecture, it is an important example of the period of transition from principality to empire.
