Kasımiye Madrasa
Artuklu, Mardin
One of Mardin's largest buildings, begun in the Artuqid period and completed in the time of the Akkoyunlu ruler Kasım, with a courtyard with a pool and a facade opening onto the plain.
Its story
Construction of the madrasa, which has no inscription, began in the Artuqid period, and the building was completed in the second half of the 15th century in the time of the Akkoyunlu Kasım. In the two-story, open-courtyard plan, student cells lie behind the porticoes; to the north is a large two-story-high iwan with a pool in front, to the east a mosque, and to the west a masjid with a tomb beside it. The water flowing from the fountain in the courtyard through a narrow channel into the pool is said to symbolize human life from birth to death; the low doors of the classrooms are interpreted as making students bow as they entered their teacher's presence. A legend that Kasım Sultan was killed here is also kept alive. The view from its terraces facing south over the plain is wide.
