Revaklı Çarşı (Arcaded Bazaar; Sipahiler / Tellallar Bazaar)
Artuklu, Mardin
A 17th-century bazaar in old Mardin, with porticoes on both sides of the street and deep shops behind them.
Its story
The Revaklı Çarşı, also known as the Sipahiler or Tellallar Bazaar, dates to the 17th century. The porticoes lined up on both sides of the street and the deep shops behind them form the bazaar's characteristic layout; the building was repaired in 2002 as part of a city-wide conservation project. Together with the Kayseriye Bedesten north of the Ulu Mosque and the coppersmiths' and jewelers' bazaars, the bazaar is part of old Mardin's still-lively commercial fabric. Walking among the sounds of hammered copper, stone arches and narrow passages is one of the best ways to see the city's daily life up close.
