Kırkkaşık Bedesten
Tarsus, Mersin
A covered market built in the 16th century to provide income for the Ulu Mosque, used today as a handicrafts bazaar.
Its story
The bedesten was built in the Ramazanid period as an endowment building at the same time as the Ulu Mosque, and its revenues were allocated to the upkeep of the mosque. The long, rectangular-plan building takes its name (kırk kaşık: forty spoons) from the number of arches inside or from different popular stories. After restoration, local products and handicrafts are sold in its shops.
